Traditional alcoholic gels were introduced to aid compliance, however, many compromised effectiveness. So when Softalind® was first designed it was decided firstly to have the most effective broad spectrum hand disinfectant available. Softalind® Alcoholic Hand Sanitiser Rinse has an alcohol content of 78%, one of the highest on the market, making it effective against 99.9% of most common found germs in 30 seconds. Softalind® also contains 3 high grade moisturisers to help maintain the skins natural protective layer and pH levels.

Increasing Compliance…….The Real Challenge
Evidence suggests that at the moment hand compliance is about 20% in the UK in acute hospitals. Hand rub should be used before and after each patient contact. If compliance is increased then the incidence of HAI's (hospital acquired infection) will decrease since the hands are the most common form of transmission. Trials have shown that compliance increases to around 70% when Alcohol is made available bedside and in multi locations.

Cosmetically acceptable solution
All gels contain thickeners and these can often leave a sticky residue on the skin that will continue to build up during use. At this stage compliance often falls.

Softalind Liquid Hand Sanitiser contains no thickeners, only alcohols plus 3 high grade moisturisers; therefore no residue- just a silky soft feel. Many trials confirm that the liquid moisturisers in Softalind maintain and even improve the skin tone in many of the users compared to their previous products. It is our view that liquids lead in the long run to improved compliance over gels.

Efficacy and speed of action
Compliance should not just be judged on acceptance to a product, but also physical compliance and good practice. The European Standard for hand hygiene, the EN1500, states best practice to be 3 ml of liquid keeping the hands wet for 30 seconds.

However, evidence shows that many nurses only apply alcohols for 8-15 seconds. That's why we ensure that Softalind contains enough alcohol in a 2ml dose to be effective within just 15 seconds and to dry quicker than a gel allowing nursing staff to get on with their work.
